NYCoRE Summer Reading: Black Appetite. White Food.

Thank you everyone who voted for NYCoRE’s Summer Reading. There were so many great choices and suggestions. We need to keep organizing these gatherings and read them all. Let’s discuss when we come together.

We decided to start with New York’s Jamila Lyiscott’s Black Appetite. White Food.: Issues of Race, Voice, and Justice Within and Beyond the Classroom. We will have three potluck style meetups in Central Park in Strawberry Fields at the 72nd Street Entrance. You don’t need to attend them all, but we are more than welcome to and we will have unique discussions each time.

Please bring something to sit on and snacks or refreshments to share with others. Also, feel free to bring children and loved ones. Hopefully, the weather will be friendly, if not we will come up with a rain plan.

NYCoRE Summer Reading

Do you want to read, study and discuss radical ideas and possibilities with NYCoRE this summer? If so, vote on our summer reading. We will announce the book and discussion times next week. Voting will end on Monday, July 15th. Feel free to suggest a book that’s not listed. Also, let us know if you are interested in helping to facilitate the discussions.

Free Minds Free People Conference Scholarship Fund

Every two years over 1000 people gather at Free Minds Free People  (FMFP), a national conference convened by the Education for Liberation Network in partnership with local organizers in the host city. This year, from July 11-14, we are excited to meet in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Conference scholarships will support youth, educators, and activists from across the country who would otherwise face financial barriers to attending and presenting at FMFP. 

FMFP is a special space and place, no small part of which is due to the leadership of youth, educators, and activists from communities across the country. Many of these leaders present about their work, ideas, hopes, and dreams during FMFP sessions, and the 2019 conference shaping up to be one of the best yet! Please join me and dozens of others in donating to the FMFP Conference Scholarship Fund to make it possible for those who need financial support to participate in this amazing experience.
