APPLY NOW FOR AN UNDOING RACISM WORKSHOP SCHOLARSHIP!

Last fall NYCoRE organized an Undoing Racism Workshop as part of a broader effort to understand institutional racism in schooling and develop anti-racist approaches to social justice education. Undoing Racism is facilitated by the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond and hosted by The Antiracist Alliance of NYC . Here is a description from their website (http://bit.ly/OaKehX ):

“We work to undo structural racism from a common understanding as presented by the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond Undoing Racism Workshop. The People’s Institute is recognized as one of the foremost anti- racism training and organizing institutions in the nation. It moves beyond a focus on the symptoms of racism to an understanding of what racism is, where it comes from, how it functions, why it persists and how it can be undone. In the New York region, The People’s Institute organizes not only with social work educators and human service providers but with school teachers, parents and youth, health care providers, criminal justice advocates, and the faith community.”

Although NYCoRE is not planning a workshop for our organization this year, we want to encourage all of our members to attend one of the upcoming workshops on October 26-28 or November 9-11.  If you are currently involved with NYCoRE and interested in taking part WE CAN SUPPORT YOU!

The regular cost for adults is $350 per individual adult or $175 for students. If at least 3 people would like to go we can get a group rate of $250 per person.  If you’ve gone before and you bring someone new you get in for free.  Since this is a form of professional development, some people have been successful at petitioning their supervisors, principals, etc to cover the cost, but if that’s not an option we are offering scholarships for all interested members.  Scholarships will be granted on a sliding scale basis.

If you are interested, please send any questions or completed scholarship forms to alanna@nycore.org.

Peace,
NYCoRE

Welcome back to school educator-activists!

Join NYCoRE for its 1st Monthly Meeting of 2012-13!

This month’s political education piece:

The Chicago Teachers Strike:
Where are we now? Where do we go from here?

Chicago has been the focus of corporate school “reform,” but Chicago is now the epicenter of the push back against it. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), along with parent and community allies, is leading the fight, and they decided to strike on September 10th.

At our monthly meeting we hope to have NYCoRE members and folks on the ground in Chicago speaking with us about what it has been like thus far, what the current situation is, and where Chicago and those that stand with Chicago Teachers will go next.
